four-eyes stylized

When Firmoo.com contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I'd like to review a pair of their glasses, I may have gotten super excited. I'd heard good things about them via other bloggers. Plus, I needed a pair of glasses for my mission! What fancy timing!

Anyway, I chose my pair and submitted the order. I figured it might take a while for them to process and ship my glasses - I was actually a little worried they wouldn't come until after I left! Not to worry though, regardless of shipping from China, my order was processed, shipped, and delivered within ten days! I was super impressed.

Holy cow, guys, I love these glasses. They were delivered last Thursday and I've scarcely taken them off since I opened the package. I love RayBan Wayfarers, but I certainly cannot afford them - these frames are such a fantastic alternative! You can find them here.

Firmoo would like everyone to know that glasses are not only for people with vision problems anymore! Glasses are becoming a big fashion trend, and are a must-have accessory - they can instantly upgrade your style. That said, Firmoo offers both prescription (like mine) and non-prescription lenses, as well as the latest trends in frames (like my Wayfarer-style frames here), for glasses, sunglasses, and goggles.

Want to change up your style a little bit, or need/want a new pair of glasses like I did? Firmoo will make it easy for you! They have launched their First-Pair-Free program to people worldwide, which is exactly what it sounds like - you pay nothing except shipping! With their wide selection of high quality frames, numerous options for lenses, and fashionable designs, as well as their impeccable service and fast delivery, I am quite certain you will not be disappointed. It's totally risk-free - give it a try, hm? They've made a believer out of me... That's for sure! I know where to go for replacement glasses in the future!

Check them out here!

pushups and donuts

I had heard this story a couple of times before today, but I heard it again at my friend Daniel's mission farewell and I decided I really wanted to post it on here. It's kind of cheesy but I honestly don't care - It gets the point across wonderfully. I'll talk more about it in the next couple of days!

Brother Christianson taught Seminary. He had a open-door policy and would take in any student that had been throw out of another class as long as they would abide by his rules. Steve had been kicked out of his sixth period and no other teacher wanted him, so he went to Brother Christianson’s class.
Steve was told that he could not be late, so he always arrived arrived on time but never more than just one second before the bell would ring. He would always sit in the very back of the room and was always the first to leave after class was over.
One day, Brother Christianson asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him. After class, Brother Christianson pulled Steve aside and said, “you think you’re pretty tough, don’t you?’
Steve answer was “Yeah, I DO.”
Then Brother Christianson asked, “How many push-up can you do?”
Steve said, “I do about 200 every night.”
“200? That’s pretty good, Steve,” Brother Christianson said. “Do you think you could do 300?”
Steve replied, “I don’t know… I’ve never done 300 at a time before.”
“Do you think you could?” Brother Christianson again asked.
“Well, I can try, “ said Steve.
“Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I need you to do 300 in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me you can do it,” Brother Christianson said.
Steve said “well… I think I can… yeah, I can do it.”
Brother Christianson said, “Good! I need you to do this on Friday.”
Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room. When class started, Brother Christianson pulled out a big box of donuts. Now these weren’t the normal kinds of donuts, they were the extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls. Everyone was pretty excited, after all it was Friday, and this was the last class of the day. They were ready to get an early start on the weekend.
Brother Christianson went to the first girl in the first row and asked, “Cynthia, do you want a donut?” Cynthia said, “Yes”
Brother Christianson then turned to Steve and asked, ”Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Cynthia can have a donut?”
Steve said “sure” and he jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten. Then Steve again sat in his desk. Brother Christianson put a donut on Cynthia desk.
Brother Christianson then went to Joe, the next person, and asked,”Joe do you want a donut?”
Joe said, “Yes!” Brother Christianson asked, ”Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?” Steve did ten pushups. Joe got a donut.
And so it went down the first aisle, Steve did ten push-ups for every person before they got their donut. He went down the second aisle, until Brother Christianson got to Scott.
Scott was captain of the football team and center of the basketball team. He was very popular and never lacking for female companionship. When Brother Christianson asked, “Scott, do you want a donut?”
Scott’s reply was, “well, can I do my own push-ups?”
Brother Christianson said, “ NO, Steve has to do then,”
Then Scott said, “Well, I don’t want one then.”
Brother Christianson then turned to Steve and asked, “would you do ten push-ups so Scott can have a donut he doesn’t want?”
Steve stared to do ten pushups, Scott said” HEY! I SAID I DIDN’T WANT ONE!”
Brother Christianson said, “Look, This is my class room, my desks and my donuts. Just leave it on the desk.” And he put a donut on Scott’s desk.
Now by his time, Steve had begun to slow a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took to much effort to get up and down. You could see a little perspiration coming out around his brow. Brother Christianson started down the third row. Now the students were beginning to get a little angry.
Brother Christianson asked Jenny, “Jenny, Do you want a donut?” Jenny said “NO.”
Then Brother Christianson asked Steve, “Steve, would you do ten pushups so Jenny can have a donut that she doesn’t want?” Steve did ten pushups. Jenny got a donut.
By now, the students were beginning to say “NO” and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks. Steve was beginning to put forth a lot of effort to get these pushups done for each donut. There began to be a small pool of sweet on the floor beneath his face, his arm and brow were beginning to get red from the physical effort involved.
Brother Christianson asked Robert to watch Steve to make sure he did ten pushups in a set because he couldn’t bear to watch Steve work for all those uneaten donuts. So Robert began to watch Steve closely. Brother Christianson started down the fourth row.
During his class some more students had wandered in and sat along the heaters along the side of the room. When Brother Christianson realized this; he did a quick count and saw 34 students in the room. He started to get worry if Steve would be able to make it.
Brother Christianson went on to the next person and the next and the next. Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time. He was taking a lot more time to complete each set.
Steve asked Brother Christianson, “Do I have to make my nose tough on each one?”
Brother Christianson thought for a moment, “well, they’re your pushups. You can do then any way that you want.” And Brother Christianson went on.
A few minutes later, Jason came to the door and was about to come in the room when all the student yelled, “NO! Don’t come in! Stay out!”
Jason didn’t know what was going on. Steve picked up his head and said, “ NO, let him come in.”
Brother Christianson said, “You realize if Jason comes in you will have to do ten pushups for him.”
Steve said, “Okay.”
And Brother Cristianson replied, “I’ll let you get Jason out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?” “Yes.”
Steve, will you do ten pushups so Jason can have a donut?” Steve did ten pushups very slowly and with great effort. Jason, Bewildered was handed a donut and sat down.
Brother Christianson finish the fourth row, then started on those seating on the heaters. Steve’s arms were now shaking with each pushup in a struggle to lift him self. By this time, there was not a dry eye in the room.
The very last two girls were cheerleaders and very popular. Brother Christianson asked, “ Linda, do you want a donut?” Linda said very sadly, “no, thank you.”
Brother Christianson asked Steve, “Steve, Would you do ten pushups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn’t want?” Grunting from the effort, Steve very slowly did ten pushups for Linda. Linda got her donut.
Brother Christianson turned to the last girl, “Susan, do you want a donut?” Susan, with tears flowing down her face, asked, “Brother Christianson, Can I help him?”
Brother Christianson said with tears flowing down his own face, “No, he must do it all alone. Steve, would you do ten pushups so Susan can have a donut?”
As Steve very slowly finished his very last pushup, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, after having done 350 pushups, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.
Ending:
Brother Christianson then turned to the room and said, “And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, after completing all that was required of him, Pleaded to the Father, ‘Into thy hands I commend my spirit.’ Collapsed and died on the cross. And so many in the world, like us, leave this special gift on the desk, uneaten.”

Rosemarie Urquico is a genius

There are a couple things/words I don't agree with in this, but it's gorgeous.

‎"Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.

She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.

Buy her another cup of coffee.

Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.

It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favourite book. It will never be your fault if she does.

She has to give it a shot somehow.

Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.

Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.

Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.

If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.

You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.

You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.

Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colourful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.

Or better yet, date a girl who writes."

remembering

So this is my 100th post. That's pretty cool.
But that's not what's important.

Yesterday marked the five-year anniversary of my Grandma McMullin's passing after several years of battling with cancer.
What a horrible disease. Not only does it slowly and painfully take its toll on the afflicted, but it slowly and painful affects the people that love that person.

It was hard to watch her go. I remember going to visit her one day near the end of her life. We walked into the living room, where she lay in her hospice bed, and said hello to her. She returned the greeting, but then said, "I should probably be saying goodbye, shouldn't I?"
Needless to say, all of the Anjewierden women commenced sobbing uncontrollably.

My Grandma Florence was an incredible woman. She loved and served everyone that she knew as best she could, and it was hard for her when the tables were turned and we were serving her. I think that she felt out of her element.
She always knew just what to say to make bruises or hurt feelings feel better. You could feel her love for you in the way she treated you and spoke to you. She was selfless in every way.

It's not great quality, but I love it nonetheless! One of the last family pictures with her.

I think about her often. She was an important part of my life, and I miss her.
However.
I know that I will see her again.
Like I talked about in this post, I am so grateful for my knowledge of forever families.
I am beyond thankful to know that, though she's not physically with me now, she can be with me spiritually, and, one day, I will be able to see and talk to her once more.

I love you, Grandma!

and now for something completely different!

Normally my music taste is centered around mellow indie rock with beautiful lyrics.
Or indie rock without any words at all...
Or basically just hipster music.
However, sometimes a song outside of those boundaries catches my attention somehow.
With these songs, my taste becomes basically just hipster music with some random mismatched stuff mixed in.
Anyway, maybe it's free on iTunes, or it's in a movie, or I hear it on a commercial, but no matter how I find it, it's usually either a) utterly beautiful, b) lyrically ingenious, or c) both.
Though it's almost never county, so this is kind of unique.
(Next thing you know I'll be posting heavy metal, or hip hop, or rap, or something else totally out of my character. ;) )
I think that this song falls into both categories.
It's all over the radio, so lots of y'all have probably heard it, but now I want you to analyze it.
I think that not only is it pretty, but it has a wonderful message - one that most celebrities/popular musical artists don't understand and/or care about.
The lyrics to this song more or less explain some of my standards. Which is neat to me!
Enjoy it. Tell me what you think after reading the lyrics more carefully. :)

I also really like the music video.

Just a Kiss
Lady Antebellum

Lying here with you so close to me
It's hard to fight these feelings when it feels so hard to breathe
Caught up in this moment
Caught up in your smile
I've never opened up to anyone
So hard to hold back when I'm holding you in my arms
We don't need to rush this
Let's just take it slow
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
No I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, with just a kiss goodnight
I know that if we give this a little time
It'll only bring us closer to the love we wanna find
It's never felt so real, no it's never felt so right
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
No I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, with just a kiss goodnight
No I don't want to say goodnight
I know it's time to leave, but you'll be in my dreams
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
No I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, oh, let's do this right, with just a kiss goodnight
With a kiss goodnight
Kiss goodnight

Nerdy "yup, Kira's a stereotypical girl" moment - Someday I hope that this will be my "song" with someone, because it's adorable...
Yup, that's pretty much it.
The. End.

rethought

Remember this song? I'm sure you do because it's soooo so so so good!
Well some crazy geniuses took the already ingenious song and did something different with it.
The original will always be my favorite, but... This is awesome.
I aspire to be as cool as these people one day.

Actually, while I'm at it, here's a another cover of it by another of my favorite geniuses!

precious :)

Okay, this is so precious. I hope that I can be like this after 60 years of marriage. :)
The description - "An elderly couple walked into the lobby of the Mayo Clinic for a checkup and spotted a piano. They've been married for 62 years and he'll be 90 this year. Check out this impromptu performance. We are only as old as we feel, it's all attitude. Enjoy!"

I'm alive!

I realize that it hasn't actually been very long since my last post, but it really feels like it has been. I mean... No marvelous Monday? Whaaaat?
Let me just take a second to explain. :)

On Monday I packed up most of the rest of my room and moved up to Logan to live with my mom's cousin, Keli Nield, and her family (husband Ryck and kids Tanner (19) and Hannah (12)).
I have already decided that Tanner is pretty much destined to be my newest best friend, because we're suuuuper similar. :) He even likes psychology. Winner, right there. :)
Anyway, the whole family is fantastic. They've been so hospitable, and have really just taken me in and treat me like they do each other. It's been so great. :)
Sadly my netbook, that I've had for a measly 2 weeks, got cracked on the way up here, so I've been out a computer. I'm currently using the Nield's family computer.
'Cos they're awesome and said that I could. :)

Tuesday I had a little bit of stress right before work, but I got it all sorted out and got to work right on time! :) I was pretty nervous about the job and everything. At first, that is.
Once I got in there, my trainer, JD, set me at ease within just the first few minutes.
He is great, as is every member of my training class! In fact, my class is so great that we're an entire day ahead in our training. Yeah. That's right. We're cool. ;)

You know what? It's only been 5 days, and I already have friends that I know I'll keep for a long time; maybe even for life! The people really are fantastic.
I'm actually excited to learn more, and to take calls, and just to come to work in general. :)
Get this- My team lead (on the call floor. Essentially... My supervisor/boss) wears sweater vests.
He's legit. :) And his name is Tannin. Imma always spell it with a ' at the end, so it's Tannin'. :)

Anyway, that's my update for now. I'm heading home in the morning for church and then we're off to Powder Mountain until Monday sometime. I shall try to post an MM, but if I don't...
I'll write one up and post it later. Haha. :)

Have I ever mentioned that if you're reading my blog, I love you?
I have? Oh. Well... I'll just say it again then. :)
You people are awesome.
So much love.

Reflecting...

Just Thinking
RF Hoak

Just sitting here and thinking, friend
And wondering how it would be
If I had not known you at all
And you had not met me.

All things we've shared would then be lost,
The smiles and heartaches, too -
The world would be a dreary place
If I had not known you.

But these fond memories through the years
All the fun times, too.
Just make me thankful you know me
And glad that I know you.

I received the above poem today from my neighbor, church leader, and friend, Kathryn Wardle, who is moving with her cute family to Boise, Idaho at the end of this week.
I love it, because it voices exactly what I've been feeling of late. So many people in my life are moving away, or going on missions, or taking different paths, and it's so strange.

People I've known almost my entire life.
People I've met along the journey thus far.
People I've only just met.
People I never got to know very well.
People I wish I'd introduced myself to.
People I admired from afar...
There are people from each category that I will never see again.
It's so weird.
And so sad.
And so scary.
Because so many of you are taking a different path than mine, I want to thank all of the people I've known these past seventeen and a half years.

All of you have changed me.
Impacted my life in some way.
Some lifted me up.
Some put me down.
But whether you befriended me,
hurt me,
complimented me,
spurned me,
loved me,
or hated me...
Every one of you helped me to grow into the person that I am today.
And for that, I thank you.
